Shelly’s Vision for a Stronger Ward 5
Public Safety
Safer Communities
Being fearful in our communities is not an option. The Ward deserves more effective, community-led policing strategies. I will work closely with the various community stakeholders (community leaders, the police, et al) to address concerns such as auto theft and burglaries that are becoming all too common. I will also advocate for greater community interactions with the police with the goal of creating stronger community bonds and encouraging two-way trust.
Safe Routes for Seniors Program
I will introduce the Safe Routes for Seniors program aimed at enhancing public safety for our senior population. This initiative will focus on improving sidewalks, crosswalks, and public spaces to make them more accessible and secure for seniors. We will conduct thorough safety audits in collaboration with senior community members to identify areas that require modifications, such as better lighting, non-slip surfaces, and longer pedestrian signals at crossings. By prioritizing the mobility and safety of our seniors, we ensure that they can participate fully and safely in community life in Ward 5.
Road Safety
With an increase in reckless driving incidents in Ward 5, our community's safety is at risk, especially for our children and elderly residents. As your councilor, I will implement targeted traffic calming measures such as speed bumps, enhanced signage, and increased traffic enforcement in high-risk areas. Additionally, I will advocate for educational campaigns that promote safe driving behaviors and initiate community discussions on traffic management to ensure our streets are safe for everyone.
Enhancing Technological Solutions for Traffic Monitoring
I will advocate for the integration of advanced technological solutions to monitor and manage traffic flow more effectively in Ward 5. This includes the deployment of smart traffic lights that adapt to real-time traffic conditions and the installation of high-resolution cameras to monitor key intersections and accident-prone areas. By leveraging technology, we can enhance our responsiveness to traffic issues, deter reckless driving through increased surveillance, and collect valuable data to further refine our traffic safety strategies.
Affordability
Food Accessibility
There are food deserts in our Ward and I will push for our city council to incentivize establishing a greater number and variety of grocery retailers (both large and small) in the community.
Housing
There should be housing options that work for you, not the other way around. I will proactively work with community leaders, developers, the Region of Peel and other levels of government to help secure more affordable housing for our residents.
Neighborhood Services
Community Empowerment and Inclusion
It’s crucial that residents are able to take ownership of decisions made regarding their community. I intend to create a community round table, where leaders within the community can discuss shared issues and voice their ideas.
Garbage Removal and Tree Maintenance
I plan to enhance the efficiency of waste management services in Ward 5 by advocating for more frequent garbage pickup and recycling initiatives. Furthermore, I will ensure that tree cutting and maintenance are conducted responsibly, balancing urban development with the preservation of our green spaces to enhance our community's natural beauty and sustainability.
Family-Friendly Spaces and Youth Initiatives
Families deserve to enjoy and be proud of the communities they live in. I will champion the establishment of more city-funded green spaces and activity centers for the youth.
Economic Development
Opportunities for Growth
My strategy focuses on nurturing a robust local economy by supporting small businesses, attracting new investments, and promoting job creation. I will work to streamline business regulations, provide incentives for local and youth entrepreneurs, and foster partnerships between businesses and educational institutions to create skill development opportunities. This approach will not only bolster economic growth but also ensure that our community members have stable and rewarding employment opportunities.
Small Business Support
To ensure a lasting legacy of economic growth and authentic leadership within our community, we will facilitate access to funding and mentorship programs. This initiative aims to empower small business owners and startups to thrive, strengthening the fabric of our community through sustainable development. Work with city planners to create an attractive environment for external investors, focusing on sustainable development projects that offer long-term benefits to our community.
